Audacity

While MP3DirectCut, below, will edit MP3s, this little proggie records, imports exports and edits WAV, AIFF as well as MP3s allowing the user to edit sounds using Cut, Copy and Paste (with unlimited Undo), mix tracks together and apply effects like bass boost, wah-wah and noise removal to recordings. This fine freeware is under constant and agressive development and improvement. Check for the latest stable version frequently. Works on any version of Windows 9.X or better.

QCD

The community didn't get behind my last (first) choice, the fine and versatile UltraPlayer, so rather than recommend the obvious, here's a new, hot player that is getting support. Further, there's a team of developers listening to users and granting feature requests. Plays all audio formats that you'll need including WMA, includes CDDBv2 integration and does an exceptional job with audio CDs. Fully customizable and skinable. Win 9x/Me/NT/2000/XP.

MP3Gain

Ooh, I love this! MP3Gain analyzes and adjusts mp3 files so that they have the same volume. It does not just do peak normalization, as many normalizers do. Instead, it does some statistical analysis to determine how loud the file actually sounds to the human ear. There is no quality lost in the change because the program adjusts the mp3 file directly, without decoding and re-encoding. Requires VB run-time files. Win 9.x, Me. 2000, XP.

Exact Audio Copy

Unlike conventional rippers, this software will grab audio like no other. Correcting for errors and jitter, the copy is indistinguishable from a pristine original, even removing distortion caused by scratches. When you buy a CD, you own it (unlike software), so it's perfectly acceptable to make a copy for yourself. Make a great one with EAC. Postcard-ware, works with all Windows.

Windows Media Recorder

Normally, streaming media can be played but not saved. WMR allows you to record stream video and audio clips from the Internet and save them to your hard drive. Requires Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player 7.0 or later. Win 9x/Me/NT/2000.

MUSICMATCH jukebox

Sure, this is also an MP3 player, but it's listed here as the easiest-to-use burner available. Ripped MP3s have to be encoded before they're recorded. This does that plus tagging and volume leveling. All flavors of Windows.

WinMX

OK, this is personal. Everybody has a favorite MP3 search, find & download utility. This remains mine. Ever since Napster went TULO, the competition has scrambled for your business. This one was an early offering with a killer database that rarely fails to satisfy. Tie it in to additional servers listed using NapMX (below) and there's nothin' that can't be had. Audio, video and picture formats supported. Go get 'em. Works with all Windows including XP.

NapMX

If you're using WinMX, you need this. Well, don't just sit there, start the download while you're reading. This gizmo will add additional servers (lots) to your searches and that's a very good thing. We're talkin' terabytes. You'll never miss, no matter how esoteric your taste. This is for the latest (3.x) version of WinMX; an earlier version is available. Get the latest versions of both, though. You'll be glad you did. For all Windows.

MP3Decode

Sometimes you (or more likely someone you know) wants to play some of those cool songs that you've downloaded from the Internet on a conventional CD player. That means .wav files. 'Might as well batch 'em and convert 'em with this fast app. Tip: There's gonna be some degradation so start with as high a bit rate as possible. Win 9x/Me/NT/2000/XP.

MP3DirectCut

Now it's possible to edit, grab sections, change volume levels and generally manipulate the hell out of MP3s all without having to decompress and recompress. Features a graph visualization and intuitive controls. Does a lot for such a small package.  All flavors of Windows.

AbyssAudio Collection

Now that your collection of MP3s is growing (exponentially, I trust), how about the best way to organize them. This app sorts by the specification that you choose: artist, genre, album, year or folder name. Get organized. Win 9x/Me/NT/2000.

'Wondering if that new freeware program is really worth the download? Here's an easy way to tell. Don't take the developer's word for it, check to see if the website has a forum. The users will tell it like it *really* is!
